APRS is a system originally developed in 1992 by Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, which uses amateur radio to transmit position reports, weather reports, and messages between users. Mobile stations are equipped with GPS navigation systems to provide real-time positioning reports.
Bob's original development of dosAPRS, allows it to run on standard DOS based personal computers with minimal system requirements. System hardware requirements only dictate the system have from 512kB to 640kB of RAM. Systems such as inexpensive palmtops (HP 100/200LX), single/dual floppy 8086/8088 notebooks, right up to today's highest powered desktop and notebooks can all run the DOS version of APRS.
In mid 1994, Mark and Keith Sproul released a version of APRS known as MacAPRS. The Mac version offered many new features to the APRS community not previously available to DOS based systems.
Early in 1996, a much-anticipated version of APRS was released for the MS Windows platform. Offering the ability to read and write Mac APRS map files, and read DOS APRS files, this was the prelude to today's ever-popular WinAPRS package.
Since the originally development of APRS, its popularity has grown immensely. Today there are versions designed to run and are fully accessible from the Internet (javAPRS). Versions of both the DOS and Windows version of APRS include the ability to converse with others across the Internet in real-time.
There is constantly new developments taking place in the APRS world including software for the 3Com PalmPilots, and new equipment such as transceivers that are "APRS" friendly.
APRS is a constantly evolving technology with new developments occurring daily. Join the fun today.
